If you have any of the USPS Forever stamps, it will take only one stamp to send the less than a one-ounce letter. If you are using older stamps, you must assure the value of the stamps meet or e cede the 49 cent rate. 49 one-cent stamps are acceptable and can be front and back of the envelope….yes, I’ve done that.

When sending documents in the mail in the United States, under what conditions do you need more than one stamp?
The answer depends on:

Size of letter
Weight of letter
Class of service (e.g. First Class, Certified, Registered, etc).
value of stamps used (you’re going to need 22 2¢ stamps for a 1 oz. (or less) First-Class letter, or you could use a 44¢ First Class stamp).
In the USPS offices I’ve patronized over the last many years, they don’t put pre-printed stamps on letters any more:
they calculate the required postage from the variables above and immediately print that on a sticky label which is then affixed to the letter to be mailed.

International letter sending – from the United States to Canada
Again, the easiest way to send letters from the United States to Canada is to use Global Forever stamps. However, there is a difference here.

We said earlier that this stamp will cover you for up to an ounce. While this is true for shipments to the UK (and any other international country), it is not the same for Canada.

Here, this stamp will cover you up to two ounces. After these two, however, you will need to add additional stamps to offset the price.

International letter sending – the United States to the United Kingdom
Unfortunately, we cannot list all the countries here, otherwise, we will never stop. But we will briefly go over the main ones. Does this sound like a plan? Awesome! Let’s go then.

The easiest way to ship letters from the United States of America to the United Kingdom is to use Global Forever stamps. These will set you back $ 1.20 and feature a green succulent. They add a certain element of style to your international mail!

If you prefer to use the national stamps forever, you need to make sure they add up to $ 1.20. It’s impossible to do just that, so you’ll end up overpaying 45 cents that way. For some of you, that might not be a problem, in which case, go for it!

Just like domestic shipping, you’ll pay more if your letter is over one ounce.

What happens if you send mail without a stamp?
As long as you have your return address on it then it will come back to you for the postage. If you don’t have a return address on it then the PO it was sent to will try to collect the postage from the recipient. If they refuse to pay postage & there is not a return address then it is sent to ‘dead letters’.

Once there they eventually open the letter to try & discover if there’s a return address inside but if not it’s discarded permanently. Up until 1986, in the U.S., it would still arrive at its destination as “Postage Due”. Stamps, having a negative value, would be affixed to the letter by the postal service, and if the recipient wanted the letter, they’d pay the postage.

Which does not work so well with postcards, since you can access the content and send brief messages without opening them?

At the same time, you are looking at the sender to see if the sender is someone you are willing to pay to receive mail from. After 1986, this was discontinued, for obvious reasons. You can still send packages COD — Collect On Delivery — by filling out a form 3816 and using that to send your package.

It’s very rarely used, and if you receive such a package, unless you are on a rural route, you will have to go to the nearest general delivery post office and pay to receive the package. I’m surprised this isn’t used by more people on Craig’s list, but unless the part or most of the packaging was transparent, you’d have a hard time convincing me to pay without examining the merchandise.

I suspect COD packages are considered antiquated and will go the way of Postage Due, sometime in the near future.

Domestic Letter Shipping
If you are sending from the United States of America to the United States of America, you just have to pay $0.55 for a Domestic Forever Stamp. Your letter will reach the recipient within 1 to 3 working days. How cool is that? Just 55 cents for such quick delivery should be truly cherished.

Bear in mind though, that this covers the first ounce. As soon as your envelope goes over that weight, you need to add an extra 15 cents per ounce onto the price. Don’t stress, we’re going to discuss this in more detail in the next section.

There are some requirements that your envelope must fit to be eligible for posting this way. These rules are as follows:

The envelope needs to be at least 5 inches by 3.5 inches but not bigger than 11.5 inches by 6.125 inches, and no thicker than ¼ inches.
It needs to have a uniform thickness.
Friends, It must be rectangular.
It must be bendable. If not, you might have to pay an extra 21 cents since it will be classed as “non-machinable”.
If your envelope is square, it needs to be at least 5 inches. This will be non-machinable so you’ll have to pay an additional 21 cents like we just mentioned.
How Many Stamps Do I Need To Send A Parcel In The U.S?
Calculating the number of stamps required for a parcel is a bit more complicated than it is for letters. This is because parcel postage is charged by weight and size of the parcel as well as the distance it is travelling.

Parcels are usually too big to deposit in a mailbox so you will have to take them to the post office to get in despatched in which case it is easiest to ask them to sort the postage for you. However, if you want to know how much you will be expected to pay, or print your own postage label, you can use the United States Postal Service postage calculator.

To use the United States Postal Service postage calculator follow these steps:
Enter the destination country in the drop-down box, and the Zip codes you are sending the parcel from and along with the date and time you will be sending it. Also select the correct option in the boxes to confirm if you are sending any live animals, day-old poultry, or hazardous materials.
Select which type of shipment you wish to use; Flat Rate Postcard, Flat Rate Envelopes, Flat Rate Boxes, or you can find the price based on shape and size.
You will now be given the price for your requested shipping options – select “display all options” at the top to compare costs for other shipping options.
You can then choose to add extra options including Certificate of Mailing, Insurance, Registered Mail, etc.
The next step will show you your final shipping cost.

If you send a mail without affixing a postal stamp then in such a case the mail will be taken to the addressee and will be handed over to him after he pays for the stamp and the leviable penalty as prescribed.

Usually, ordinary postal mail is delivered in the mailbox of the addressee but one being unstamped will be delivered only to the addressee as payment is to be received in the account of non-stamping.

On the other hand, registered or speed post is delivered only to the addressee. Both of these cost quite a lot as against simple post as such a mail without a stamp in technical terms does the work of registered or speed post delivered personally to the addressee at a lesser cost. Delivery to the addressee is certain.

If the addressee refuses to pay the same then the letter will not be delivered to him and the same will be returned to you and you may have to pay penalty for the transit of the mail as has been incurred by the postal authorities.

If you plan to send a postcard within the United States of America, it is a bit cheaper. You just need to buy a Postcard Stamp for 35 cents and pop it in the mailbox. However, you do have the option of overpaying by purchasing a Domestic Forever Stamp. As you now know, this is 55 cents.

To be eligible for this stamp class, your postcard must meet the following requirements:

It must be rectangular. If it’s not, different rates and stamp rules apply.
It must be at least 3.5 inches high by 5 inches long
Friends, It must be at least 0.007 inches thick.
It cannot be bigger than 4.25 inches high by 6 inches long.
It cannot be thicker than 0.016 inches.
