He also worked as a bodyguard at Maxim’s restaurant in Gdynia and as a bodyguard for “Patron,” the Tri-largest City’s fence.

He became a money changer in the mid-1970s and created the first organized criminal cell to import stolen vehicles from Germany and Austria to Poland, although government attempts to prove him as fencing only twenty cars were made.

Niko was a sponsor of Lechia Gdansk in the early 1980s, and after winning the Polish Cup in the 1982/1983 season, he was given the title of “Meritorious for Gdansk” by Kazimierz Rynkowski, the city’s then-president.

He moved to West Germany in the mid-1980s, where he continued to run the smuggling of stolen cars. Niko lived in Hamburg with his third wife, where he co-owned the “Skotex” firm and an electronics store.

Nikos went from Hamburg to Berlin in November 1986, where he was detained by police in 1989 while driving a stolen Audi Coupé automobile. He was condemned to one year and nine months in prison for this and was imprisoned at Berlin’s Moabit prison.

He escaped on December 4, 1989, after less than three months in prison: he changed clothes with his brother and silently departed the Berlin-Tegel prison during a visit.

Nikos returned to Poland illegally via Austria in the early 1990s. He managed to elude a police raid in Krakow in 1992. He eluded a police convoy in Warsaw in July of the same year. He remained in hiding for several months after an arrest warrant was issued for him.

In February 1993, he was apprehended in Warsaw’s oliborz district on suspicion of forging a passport and fleeing a police convoy.

Nikos was sentenced to two years in prison in 1993 and then he was released from prison in February 1994, ostensibly for good behavior but in reality due to bribery paid to officers by the Prison Service.

He began investing in respectable interests after recovering his freedom. He was also well-known for recovering stolen vehicles for no charge.

The prosecution of Nikodem Skotarczak, charged by prosecutor’s office detectives of directing a criminal cell dealing with car theft, began in October 1996 in the then Provincial Court in Gdansk.
