The information in this article can help you when:

  • A game card is inserted in a Nintendo Switch system but the software application cannot be opened or started.
  • Possible messages:
    • “Unable to start software. Return to the menu and try again.”

Possible Solutions

  • Ensure your system has the latest system update installed.
  • Check for any available software updates for the problematic games.

Situation not resolved

If multiple game cards cannot be read, the Nintendo Switch system will need to be repaired. For testing purposes, please include at least two of the non-working game cards

Dust or other foreign objects could be causing the game read issues with the problematic game card.

  2. Gently push down on the inserted game card until the card clicks.
