Washington-White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews resigned Wednesday to become the third White House staff member to leave their position as a result of protests and riots at Capitol Hill.
“I am honored to serve in the Trump administration and proud of the policies we have enacted,” Matthews said in a statement received by ABC News. “I was working in a parliamentary hall and was deeply anxious about what I saw today. The White House social secretary Ricky Niseta has submitted a resignation in response to the protest, a source with direct knowledge said.
Stephanie Grisham, Chief of Staff of Melania Trump and former White House Press Secretary, also resigned in protest. She got a job in April.

Grisham has been a longtime member, a loyal member of the Trump administration, began as an aide to the campaign in 2015, and later served as Deputy Press Secretary under Sean Spicer. Grisham has built a reputation for prioritizing First Family privacy while working for the First Lady.
During his tenure as a spokesman, Grisham never gave a traditional briefing, saying he had become “a lot of theaters.” She has repeatedly publicly criticized the media, claiming that the media does not regularly report on the president’s success.
Grisham enthusiastically defended the president during the impeachment and appeared on many news programs, including ABC’s “Good Morning America” last December. In an interview with ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos, Grisham categorically insisted on the president that he “did nothing wrong” withholding aid from Ukraine. She also sought to justify Trump’s derogatory comments about the deceased husband of a Michigan parliamentarian who supported his impeachment, saying the president was a “counter puncher.”
Grisham was accused of leaving a provocative note to Trump’s next staff member in November 2019 when an Obama administration aide surrendered the White House office in 2017. Of the encouragement they said they left for their successors.
